Edéhzhíe National Wildlife Area
The Canadian Wildlife Service will soon designate the Edéhzhíe Dehcho Protected Area as a National Wildlife Area under the Canada Wildlife Act. This designation will ensure the long-term protection of the area. According to the Canada Wildlife Act, National Wildlife Areas are created and managed for the purposes of wildlife conservation, research, and interpretation. Environment and Climate Change Canada uses an ecosystem approach to manage and plan for National Wildlife Areas.
“Canada commits to protecting the lands, waters and wildlife of Edéhzhíe under Canadian law by designating it as a National Wildlife Area and working with the Dehcho First Nations in partnership toward ensuring the area’s preservation.”
Management of National Wildlife Areas is undertaken to maintain the ecological integrity of the site for the benefit of migratory birds, species at risk, and other wildlife of national importance. Guided by the Wildlife Area Regulations, National Wildlife Areas are managed to conserve their important biodiversity. Although some sites have facilities to view wildlife, many of Environment and Climate Change Canada’s protected areas are managed for the protection of wild species only.
